Overall, 1.1 million foreigners travelled to Portugal in November, a record number for that month. Spaniards and Britons came second and third, with 131,000 and 124,000 travellers respectively, INE said in its monthly report. The number of U.S. tourists has grown significantly in recent years as they increasingly find the southern European country cheap, sunny and safe. Tourism, a key driver of Portugal's economy, accounted for almost 15% of gross domestic product before the pandemic.

The company based the decision on productivity, organization and technical reasons, the union spokesman said as Telefonica and the unions started negotiating the layoffs. In a statement Telefonica confirmed the labour "adjustment", but declined to say how many jobs it intended to axe. The company will negotiate the extent of the job cutting with the union, so that the actual cuts could be fewer than the 5,100 ones targeted by the company, UGT spokesperson Diego Gallart said.

"CNMC found no indication that the platforms have participated in or facilitated the publication of these false opinions," it said in a statement, adding that the companies invested in detecting fake reviews and collaborated with ongoing investigations. The watchdog has, however, detected possible signs of a violation of consumer protection regulations, and therefore sent the complaint to the consumer rights authority. An Amazon spokesperson said his company is acting against fake reviews on its websites.

The CNMV said on Wednesday that it had opened disciplinary proceedings against Spanish technology provider Miolos S.L. over two mass campaigns advertising cryptoassets. Advertisers and companies that market cryptoassets must inform the CNMV at least 10 days beforehand about the content of campaigns targeting more than 100,000 people. Spain's rules also apply to cryptoasset service providers when advertising their activities and to any person advertising on their own or on behalf of third parties.

MADRID (Reuters) - A new wealth tax introduced by Spain as part of measures aimed at easing the cost of living of ordinary Spaniards amid high inflation was endorsed by the Constitutional Court, it said on Tuesday. The court rejected an appeal lodged by Madrid region which considered the levy infringed its regional prerogatives, the court said in a statement. The levy raised more than 600 million euros this year, according to the Budget Ministry. Government spokesperson Isabel Rodriguez said the tax was important to achieve what she called a "fair taxation". Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is negotiating with separatist Catalan parties to get their support for another term after inconclusive elections on July 23.

The Church has faced sexual abuse scandals in several countries including the United States, Ireland and France over past decades. But the issue only surfaced for public debate in Spain, where nearly 60% of people describe themselves as Catholic, following a landmark media investigation in 2021.
